What is a Pinzgauer?

The Pinzgauer, named after the Austrian farm horses of sturdy build, high endurance and excellent mountain climbing ability, was developed by Steyr-Daimler-Puch of Austria in 1971 as a multi-purpose, military vehicle for on and off-road use to operate in some of the most difficult terrain, and has proven itself in the toughest environmental conditions throughout the world. The Pinzgauer proved five times more reliable than its closest rival in testing.

Steyr-Daimler-Puch developed 3 models; two with 4 wheel drive, the Pinzgauer 4x4 710m canvas top and the Pinzgauer 4x4 710k hardtop, and a 6 wheel drive model the Pinzgauer 6x6 712m canvas top. These vehicles have recently become available for the very serious off-road enthusiast and for people whose work takes them beyond the paved roads.

Pinzgauers are available in both a 4x4 and 6x6 wheel configuration in Soft and Hard Tops. Both have a fully synchronized five-speed gearbox coupled with high and low range gear ratios. They have front and rear hydraulic differential lockers, which are easily activated on-the-fly from within the cabin. Lockers engage hydraulically to lock all 4 or 6 wheels in gear so they all provide power, even if one or more wheels are suspended in the air. This provides significantly more traction than the majority of other off-road vehicles. When other vehicles get stuck, you will be able to drive around them and pull them out with your Pinzgauer.

Pinzgauers have independent front and rear suspensions and drop-hubs providing a 14 inch ground clearance at the lowest point. Approach and departure angles for off-road driving is 43 degrees allowing easy maneuvering up and down steep slopes. It can ford up to 30 inches of water.

The engine is air-cooled so it is not susceptible to freezing in the cold climates. It is a horizontal, four-cylinder, in-line, easy to maintain engine, and delivers 89 HP. It can propel the vehicle at speeds up to 65 MPH and averages 12 to 14 MPG of gas on the road.
